A great barber shop runs on memory: your usual cut, your usual chair, the usual conversation. Our editors sat in twelve chairs across the city, paid full price every time, and judged each shop on consistency, cleanliness, booking ease and whether the cut still looked sharp two weeks later.
What separates the best from the rest
The top five all do the same unglamorous things well. Consultations before clippers — a real conversation about growth patterns and maintenance, not a nod and a number-two guard. Sanitised tools in the open, not in a drawer. And honest scheduling: if a fade needs forty minutes, they book forty minutes instead of stacking chairs three deep.
Prices and booking
Expect $35–$55 for a cut in most neighbourhoods, more downtown and for hot-towel shaves. Every shop on our final list takes online booking with same-week availability, and all five honour their posted prices — no mystery “long hair” surcharges at the till. Walk-ins are possible midweek, but Saturdays belong to those who booked ahead.
Our five picks
From a Junction institution that has cut three generations of one family to a Scarborough fade specialist with a two-week waitlist, the winners span the whole city. Each has a full Brightside page with hours, prices and reviews — find your chair, book it, and thank us at week three when the cut still looks fresh.
